Latvian floorball players finish fifth in the world championship for the seventh time / Diena

Accurate shots by Pēteras Trekše and Daniel Jānis Aņas made it possible to win the first period with 2:0. In the first six minutes of the second period, the Germans tied the score, but by the end of the period, Edgars Puriņš and Andris Rajeckis restored the two-goal lead. In the first half of the third period, Trekše scored two more balls into the opponent’s goal, who later helped Moritz Krūmin to make it 7:2.

The Germans recovered one goal, but in the remaining five minutes they did not escape from the loss. Krūmiņš added a point to the victory of the Latvian national team, who made it 8:3 after a pass by goalkeeper Jānis Salcevičas in the penultimate minute.

The Latvians were fourth in subgroup B, where they lost to the Czech Republic (3:6), Sweden (2:11) and Germany (4:6). After that, Latvia beat Estonia 5-2 in the round of 16, recognized the superiority of Switzerland 1-3 in the quarter-finals, and on Saturday beat Slovakia 8-5 and secured a place among the top six teams in the world.

Meanwhile, the Germans lost to Sweden (4:19) and the Czech Republic (6:8) in subgroup B before their victory over Latvia, but defeated Canada 21:3 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, the German floorball players recognized Finland’s superiority with 2:11, followed by a 6:5 overtime victory over the Norwegians.

The Latvian men’s national team currently occupies the fifth position in the world ranking of the International Floorball Federation (IFF), and this position was also won in the previous two final tournaments in Prague and Helsinki.

Latvian floorball players have previously participated in all 13 world championships held so far, and the highest achievement is the fifth position obtained six times (2006, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2020).

The final tournament of the World Championship will take place in the Swiss cities of Zurich and Winterthur until November 13.
