The president of La Gantoise, Ivan De Witte, expressed his displeasure following the incidents against Club Brugge on Sunday. The Ghent supporters threw firecrackers and unfurled a banner against their former player, Roman Yaremchuk. After the match, riots broke out between the two hard cores and law enforcement used the water cannon.
“As a club, we cannot overlook what happened before, during and after this match. I strongly condemn violence and the use of pyrotechnic material“, said De Witte on Friday in a press conference. “We will not stop there. We want to take action with the help of the competent authorities.“
“When I arrived at the stadium, I had a good feeling. It was full and there was atmosphere. Until I saw this banner calling Yaremchuk a peephole. There, a completely different feeling came over me. Just before the first goal (9th minute), smoke bombs landed on the lawn near our goalkeeper. The bullet collectors were hit by these projectiles and were burned. I feared that the game would be stopped. The projectiles came from the block where there is always a lot of atmosphere.“
The hooliganism of the 80s and 90s seems more relevant than ever. “Football is a beautiful product, which we must not allow to be contaminated by a few individuals. We hope to have the support of other Jupiler Pro League teams in our fight. We will talk about these riots at next Monday’s meeting with our supporters council. I still believe in dialogue. I also want to start a dialogue with the hard core. Parents should not be afraid to bring their children to the stadium. Aren’t hooligans known in all clubs? So why not take action against these people“
