MANILA, Philippines – Judoka Sophia Nicole Novino scored an ippon victory (1-0) over Mikeighla Louise de Vera of Baguio Judo Club in the 44 kg division of judo at the Eighth Martial Arts Festival of the Philippine Sports Commission for Women at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

“It’s good that actual competition is back after nearly three years of hardly any tournaments,” said Novino, a 14-year-old grade 8 student at the National Academy of Sports in Capaz, Tarlac. She defeated Gabrielle Lorine Dizon and Princess Maurine Villafranca en route to the title match with De Vera.

Rhian Napoles also shone in capturing the 48kg crown from Mariana Alicia Roces following her previous triumphs, which included defeating bronze medalist Jamila Abanador in the semifinals.

Other judoka who climbed on the podium were Shanaia Yve Febrer (-32 kg), Jhenica Serrano (-40 kg), Analyn Dino (-52 kg), Samara Nina Vidor (-57 kg), Maegan Motilla (-63 kg). ), Raphaela Estrada (-70 kg). ) and Francesca Michaela Roces (+70kg).

Over at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, outstanding national teams Jiah Pingot and Grace Loberanes proved their championship, as expected.

Pingot, a silver medalist at the Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam earlier this year, gave Mandaluyong City’s Lady May Carabuena a solid lesson in the 53kg freestyle senior event, while veteran Loberanes easily defeated Kimberly Jhoy Bondad in traditional wrestling at 57kg.

Wrestlers Cathlyn Vergara (classic 120 lbs), Mary Jhol Cacal (110 lbs), Jean Mae Lobo (130 lbs), Junior Grappler Melissa Tumasis (120 lbs), Nicole Pinlac (58 lbs), Rhea Cervantes (130 lbs), Amber Arcilla (57kg and Nashica Tumasis (Freestyle 53kg) also dominated their respective categories.
