LIVE BALL – The ban on wearing the One Love captain’s armband which shows support for the LGBTQ community at the 2022 World Cup was once a polemic for several teams competing in Qatar. Even some teams had insisted on continuing to wear it.

However, FIFA issued an ultimatum that anyone who dared to wear it would be punished. As is known, Qatar is a Muslim country that does not allow anything related to LGBTQ. In the end, all teams agreed to wear the captain’s armband that had been provided by the committee.

The German national team was in the spotlight ahead of the first match in Group E because they protested by posing to cover their mouths during a team photo session on November 23, 2022. The shut-up pose was a satire from Hansi Flick’s squad which hinted at FIFA’s silence.

Prior to the match, seven senior German national team players reportedly held separate discussions to discuss the protest action. One of the players who reportedly participated in the meeting was Ilkay Guendogan.

When asked whether his team would protest again at another match, he emphasized that the ‘political’ issue in Qatar had been completed. “To be honest, I haven’t thought about politics (at the 2022 World Cup),” Guendogan said as quoted from The Athletic.
