Ibai Gómez (Bilbao, turns 33 on Friday) leaves football. Hours after he terminated his contract with Deportivo, the former Athletic player announced that he is leaving the sport that he has loved since childhood. But, in a two-minute video, he assures that it is not a goodbye, but a see you later. We’ll keep seeing each other, he comes to say.

Since leaving Athletic in the summer of 2021, Ibai Gómez has played in two squads. At the beginning of the year he signed for the Iranian Foolad to participate in the Asian Champions League. He stuck to 70 minutes in four games out of the six group stage games. His team qualified and will play the round of 16 in February.

In the summer he returned to Spain to try to contribute to Dépor’s return to professional football. Ibai’s adventure in A Coruña ends before reaching Christmas with poor data. He has only played 185 minutes spread over seven games of the First RFEF, the bronze category of Spanish football. His last game was on October 16 against Linares, when he only played five minutes.

It counted little for the first coach, Borja Rodríguez. He only gave him two starts in seven games before being fired. The arrival of Óscar Cano aggravated the situation. Since October 11 he has barely played five minutes in the last seven games. And now, he says goodbye.
