Both Hamilton and Vettel made their F1 debuts in 2007, although the German completed his first full season in 2008. When Vettel raced for Ferrari, Hamilton managed to beat him for the title in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
“I think we’ve always had great battles with each other,” Hamilton admits. “I’m sitting here thinking – a lot of drivers are coming back, like Fernando Alonso. Maybe Vettel will come back too. At the moment I’m assuming it will be his last race, but he’ll be back. Formula 1 always kind of sucks at your back and we have observed this with many riders.”
Vettel joked at the press conference that when Hamilton decides to retire, they could do a “swap deal” so that Vettel could return to the F1 championship with Mercedes.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be Vettel’s 299th race in his F1 career. During this time, he became one of the most successful drivers in history, as he won 53 victories, 122 podiums, started 57 times from the first position, and also achieved 38 fastest laps in the race. Together with the “Red Bull” team from 2010 to 2013, Vettel became the F1 champion four times.
