At the sight of the recently unveiled statue of Gerd Müller, fans hardly want to see any similarities to the Bayern legend and resort to drastic words.

Nördlingen/Munich – The bronze statue of Gerd Müller, which was unveiled on November 3 in his hometown of Nördlingen, is said to show the “bomber of the nation” scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 win over the Netherlands in the 1974 World Cup final. Some fans may not be able to identify the former striker of the FC Bayern but not recognizable in the statue and sometimes create wild associations. The responsible sculptor Herbert Deiss also gets the displeasure of the commentators on social media.

Gerd Müller or an anime star?

Under the picture of the Gerd Müller statue, which BR24 shared on his Facebook page, the storm of enthusiasm about the monument to the deceased Müller is limited. Displeasure that was in no way foreseeable the day before, during the unveiling on site. Among other things, honorary president of FC Bayern gave themselves Uli Hoeneß and the former Müller teammate Sepp Maier the honor in Nördlingen. And the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder did not miss the opportunity to pay homage to the “bomber of the nation” on his birthday.

While the guests of honor all seemed very satisfied from the statue, a wave of indignation broke out on the Internet. A user asks, “are the clients and sov. “Artists” all blind these days?” Another agrees, seeing “No resemblance at all” and even calling the statue “just ugly, an insult to the soccer player!”

Other commentators then take the matter less seriously and try to find other similarities, if not with Gerd Müller. “Reminds me more of Tsubasa than Müller,” writes one, meaning Tsubasa Ozora, anime character from the cult soccer series Captain Tsubasa.

Online malice will hardly diminish the joy of the Müller monument

The buckets of malice that have now been emptied on Facebook will hardly detract from the joy in Nördlingen about the manifestation of the city’s most famous son. Gerd Müller’s widow, Uschi, was also present at the unveiling and she didn’t say a word of criticism about her husband’s portrait either. Rather, she exuded great enthusiasm when she inspected the statue together with FCB President Herbert Hainer.

The residents of the city of Nördlingen also seem satisfied with the bronze image of Müller, for which the population campaigned via a list of signatures for its construction in the city center. While the grandees of FC Bayern pay homage to a former FCB striker, they have to worry about the current Bayern goalgetter. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is hotly traded in the Premier League. (sch)
