Ecuador draws against the Netherlands 1-1 and both approach the second round of the World Cup

AL RAYYAN, Qatar (Telemundo Atlanta) – Ecuadorian Énner Valencia scored his third goal in the World Cup in Qatar this Friday, in a match against the Netherlands team that ended in a tie to one, with which the host country was left eliminated from the tournament.

The tie leaves Ecuador and the Netherlands with one point each, to accumulate a total of four in Group A. Qatar is left with zero points, after losing a few hours earlier against the Senegal team by 3- 1.

Ecuador dominated most of the match, after Cody Gakpo scored after six minutes with a high kick from the edge of the penalty area, opening the scoring for the European team. This has so far been the fastest goal scored in Qatar.

Ecuador equalized in the 49th minute, when Valencia shot taking advantage of goalkeeper Andries Noppert leaving the net for the Netherlands, after deflecting Pervis Estupiñán’s shot.

The Ecuadorians celebrated their captain’s goal by taking a knee at the Khalifa International Stadium, while pointing to the night sky.

Ecuador nearly scored a second goal to take the game, but Gonzalo Plata’s high left-footed shot was saved on the crossbar.

The South American squad will face Senegal on Tuesday and only need a draw to advance within their group, while the Netherlands will play already eliminated Qatar.
