(Daejeon = Yonhap News) Reporter Yang Young-seok = As four cities and provinces in the Chungcheong region (Daejeon, Sejong, Chungnam, and Chungbuk) were confirmed as the venues for the 2027 Summer World University Games (Universiade), the preparation of related infrastructure has become urgent.

According to Daejeon City and Chungnam Province on the 15th, the 2027 Universiade will be held for 12 days in 4 cities and provinces in the Chungcheong region during August.

Archery, gymnastics, track and field, basketball, diving, fencing, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, management, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and badminton, including 15 basic events, as well as up to 18 events across four regions. spread out and

We plan to utilize existing facilities as much as possible, but there are also considerable new sports facilities that need to be built.

All four cities and provinces reported to the International University Sports Federation (FISU) evaluation team that they would build or expand nine facilities.

In particular, Daejeon City and Sejong City, which host the opening and closing ceremonies, must build a new multi-purpose stadium.

Since the city of Daejeon demolished Hanbat Sports Complex earlier this year, there is virtually no sports complex.

The city plans to build a main stadium and multi-purpose gym by June 2027 in the sports town to be created in the southwestern region, and hold opening ceremonies and fencing competitions.

The multipurpose gym, which was targeted for completion in 2029, was also changed to be built in time for the opening of the Games.

Although they say they will speed up the construction, it is also true that administrative procedures and securing budget are tight given that the competition begins two months after the completion of the stadium.

For this reason, when the FISU evaluation team visited, it was reported that they conveyed their intention to use the Daejeon World Cup Stadium as an alternative if there is a problem with the construction of the main stadium in the southwest region.

In order for the southwest sports town to be completed on time, administrative procedures such as the central government investment review and feasibility study must proceed without a hitch.

Above all, the lifting of the green belt (development restriction zone), which is currently being promoted, must be preceded.

Daejeon City expects that the restriction on the development of the southwest sports town will be lifted by the end of next year at the latest.

Some predict that the hosting of the Universiade could speed up administrative procedures.

As the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism succeeded in hosting the event together, government cooperation is expected to proceed smoothly.

An official from Daejeon City said, “Due to the issue of lifting the green belt, there is a problem with whether administrative procedures will proceed as scheduled or be delayed by Daejeon City. There is no problem preparing for the tournament because there is such a good World Cup stadium.”
