The future of Sergio Busquets is still up in the air. The midfielder’s contract ends with FC Barcelona on June 30 and he seems to have two options on the table: renew with Barça -he has the support and backing of Xavi Hernández- or head to Major League Soccer (MLS) and start his last stage as a soccer player in the United States.
Asked if he has decided where he will play next season, Sergio Busquets has been very clear. “Not yet. I already said it in the summer and at the press conference against Switzerland in Zaragoza. Just like the World Cup, I haven’t decided. It is my last year, I know that many things have been said, but I have always spoken in the same way. I have nothing signed for one side or the other. We will see how it goes, but around February or so I would like to be clear about it and decide.”he explained in an interview with ‘El Larguero’ from ‘Cadena Ser’.
In the same way, he has also been questioned about whether the Qatar 2022 World Cup will be the last World Cup that he plays as a footballer. “I have not decided, but he looks more like yes. I am already an age and, despite having the confidence of the coach and feeling good and important, I am closer to being the last. I want to enjoy this World Cup, but I’m not going to decide anything now or when the tournament is over,” she pointed out.
Of course, he has slipped that there would be more chances of continuing in the ‘Red’ if Luis Enrique continues as coach: “well, yes, I would think about it”, he commented. Along the same lines, he has added that “This selection has been made by Luis Enrique and he has molded it according to his philosophy and it has turned out really well”. And he has pointed out: “If he doesn’t continue, I suppose another coach will put his stamp back on”.
In the same interview, he acknowledged that Pedri and Gavi “they surprised during the first months”, but he does not “like to compare them with Xavi and Iniesta”, although “Pedri can be similar to Andrés”. On whether Barça players perform better in the Spanish team, he pointed out that “it may be a bit, but I don’t think it’s that exaggerated because there are two teams, coaches, environments and philosophies with different nuances.”
