Switzerland is still running like clockwork at the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup. After the 3-0 victory over Italy, when Belinda Bencic and Jil Teichmann had provided the points, Viktorija Golubic and Bencic again brought about the decisive factor in a duel with Canada.

Golubic (WTA 77) beat Bianca Andreescu (WTA 45) 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 after an increase run. Then Bencic (WTA 12) put Leylah Fernandez (WTA 40) in his place 6:0, 7:5.

This means that Switzerland is already the group winner and semi-finalist before the final doubles. In the round of the last four, last year’s finalists will meet a strong team one way or another: opponents will be either the USA or the Czech Republic.

Bencic keeps up-coming Fernandez at bay

With the 1-0 lead thanks to Golubic in the back, Bencic played big in the 2nd individual. In the first set, she managed an almost flawless performance. The eastern Swiss didn’t concede a single game to the 2021 US Open finalist and won the encounter in just 25 minutes to zero.

But it didn’t go on in the same style. The left-hander from Canada reared up in the second set and was now absolutely equal. Numerous worth seeing rallies developed. When the score was 4:4, Bencic managed a break, which she couldn’t confirm. But with another breakthrough in service, the individual Olympic champion made it 6:5 a few minutes later. And this time she kept her nerves on her own serve and served the match home.

Fighter Golubic

In her first appearance at this year’s Billie Jean King Cup, Golubic lost the starting set against Andreescu, the 2019 US Open winner, 6-2. But once again the Zurich woman showed her fighting qualities. She won the second set 6:3 and, thanks to a strong game, advanced to 5:1 in the decisive round.

But it got tight again. At the score of 4:5, 30:30 from Andreescu’s point of view, the Canadian made two simple mistakes, so that Golubic was still able to raise his arms in celebration.
