Schalke board member Bernd Schröder in an interview about the chaos in Gelsenkirchen after Rouven Schröder’s departure, contact with Clemens Tönnies – and how the return to the top third of the Bundesliga should succeed.

Mr. Schröder, FC Schalke have once again had very restless days. Shortly after the dismissal of trainer Frank Kramer, Rouven Schröder decided to resign last week, which looked like an escape. Is this impression wrong?

I can understand how it might seem like that from the outside. It looked different from the inside perspective, because we on the Executive Board were of course familiar with the topic longer than the general public. That didn’t come overnight. We’ve already looked at whether there are still ways to change Rouven’s mind, we would have liked to have kept him. But since it became clear that this was impossible, there was a plan to work on it in the same way and in coordination with the announcement of the new coach as we did. Did we wish it would come? Absolutely no way. Was our internal procedure structured at all times? Yes.
