General

NIJMEGEN – Exercise keeps us fit! It is especially important for people with Parkinson’s disease to keep moving. Recent research shows that people with Parkinson’s who continue to exercise are less likely to deteriorate. While their illness makes it more difficult for them to move. That is why BC Mariken has set up a special training for people with Parkinson’s. “Some people even automatically walk faster when they see the shuttle!” says BC Mariken.

“During the training we specifically do a number of exercises to master badminton, but there is also a special focus on exercises that are extra important for people with Parkinson’s disease. In addition, play is always in the foreground and we want to have fun together.”

“Although badminton is a good sport for staying active, it does require a certain level of mobility. We strive to perform the exercises standing up and moving. Not sure if the sport is right for you? Feel free to contact us or discuss it with your physiotherapist or doctor.”

Initiators

This initiative was set up by Helena Cockx, medical researcher at Radboud University and trainer at BC Mariken, and Clark Nowack, lecturer at the HAN University of Applied Sciences and chairman of the recreation committee at BC Mariken. In a HAN student study, Helena and Clark, together with three volunteers with Parkinson’s disease, drew up a plan for a specific training.

Are you or do you know someone with Parkinson’s who would like to play badminton? Come play along (free without obligation). Please contact [email protected], [email protected] or visit the website:
