ATP – WTA > Tursunov (coach of Bencic): “I have the impression that on the women’s circuit, competition allows you not to surpass yourself, because if you can win by putting in 50% effort, why deliver 100%?”

Recently become coach of Belinda Bencic after training Aryna Sabalenka, Anett Kontaveit or Emma Raducanu on the women’s circuit, Dimitry Tursunov, in an interview with Sportskeeda, discussed the main differences between men’s and women’s tennis. And according to him, the WTA circuit would even allow some players to save themselves.

“In a men’s game, it’s almost impossible to survive. We could discuss the reasons for this situation, but that’s how I see it. I’ve had my fair share of arguments from all the critics, especially if they want to put this in the gender perspective, which they always do these days, it’s more like the fashion to address any sort of criticism of women’s tennis to that. But the reality is that if you look at the stats, I’m sure there are a lot more unforced errors. In addition, the general level between the players is a little tighter among the men. I think it’s more competitive. And it forces you to improve, because if you don’t, you won’t be able to survive. I’ve mentioned a few times that I feel like on the women’s tour, competition allows you to not push yourself, because if you can win by putting in 50% effort, why put in 100%? It’s actually quite surprising and funny how some people refuse to see this part. I think that’s really the main difference. »
