Andy Murray gives his verdict on Carlos Alcaraz’s astonishing season

Former world number 1 Andy Murray has praised Carlos Alcaraz as he thinks it’s “special” what the 19-year-old Spaniard has been able to achieve this year. Alcaraz has had a stunning 2022 season, having won a Grand Slam and two Masters titles.

Moreover, Alcaraz became the youngest No. 1 in tennis history after winning the US Open. “I think what Alcaraz has done this year is special. I also think about what has happened in recent years – and yes, there will always be a time when a generation passes or comes to the end of its career – but some of the results were helped by Novak not being able to play in Australia this year.

He also didn’t play the US Open and is arguably still the best player in the world. And I think that influenced some results a bit as well,” Murray told Eurosport.

Murray praises Carlos Alcaraz

At 19, Alcaraz is a Grand Slam champion and the highest ranked player in the world. Murray, 35, is happy to see a young star like Alcaraz do great things at a very young age and likely prove the game will be in good hands once Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic join retired Roger Federer.

“As I said, for me Alcaraz had an amazing year. I think Stefanos Tsitsipas did extremely well, Felix Auger-Aliassime will potentially win three weeks in a row [à Florence, Anvers et Bâle] and also begins to make a big effort.

This is – for me – what should happen. It’s normal now, what’s happening,” Murray added. Carlos Alcaraz, who became a Grand Slam champion at the US Open, is just getting started.

Alcaraz is fully committed to tennis and he works hard and improves his game. For this reason, some believe that Alcaraz could one day reach the mark of 20 Grand Slam titles.
