‘Ajax shows interest in Mexican World Cup star Chávez’

9:44 – Mexico was unable to qualify for the eighth finals at the World Cup in Qatar. In group C, it had to leave second place in the group stage to Poland, which went to the last sixteen with a better goal difference. Midfielder Luis Chávez (26), however, made a good impression, which would have put him on Ajax’s wish list.

Chávez caused a sensation by shooting a free kick from a great distance in the last group match with Saudi Arabia. In the end, his goal turned out not to be enough for second place in the group, also because the Saudis managed to score in injury time. Until that moment, the goal difference of the Mexicans was still equal to that of Poland. However, the Eastern Europeans would have continued on the basis of fewer yellow cards.

At the World Cup, Chávez had a starting place with the Mexicans in all three group matches. His striking free kick was his first goal for the national team, for which he has made twelve appearances so far. Chávez is under contract with Pachuca in his own country. The team from Amsterdam has a partnership with that club, as a result of which two youth players from the Mexican club recently did an internship at De Toekomst. In the past, Ajax also did business with Pachuca when it rented attacker Dario Cvitanich to the team.

Competition
However, Ajax is not the only privateer on the coast for Chávez’s services. According to the Mexican STUDY FC Porto and Bayer Leverkusen also have him in their sights. The Germans even beckoned to him via their Spanish-language Twitter channel. Still, no club has officially reported to Pachuca, chairman Armando Martínez confirmed to the Mexican Fox Sports. The player should cost about seven million dollars, although the above-average interest from Europe can raise that price considerably, Mexican media expect.
