Aix-en-Provence: in intimacy with Yves Klein in Caumont

Until March 26, 2023, the Caumont Center d’art d’Aix-en-Provence hotel presents, in collaboration with the Yves Klein Archives, the exhibition “Yves Klein, intimate”.

The works exhibited there provide a better understanding of the artist’s spirit and testify to his avant-gardism which revolutionized the artistic sphere in the 20th century. The exhibition was built by highlighting the testimonies of those close to Yves Klein, those of his wife, the artist Rotraut, one of his models Elena Palumbo-Mosca and his judo student Gérard Zlotykamien .

The exhibition includes Yves Klein’s most iconic masterpieces as well as works lesser known to the general public. Found at the back of the artist’s studio, unpublished archives and unique objects are exhibited there.

The works highlight the scientific and innovative spirit of Yves Klein. Indeed, not having the training, the artist worked a lot with professionals, as was the case for his paintings made with very powerful gas flames as brushes. ” Yves was looking for the color of the skin in his painting, the skin of the model, and he found that the color of fire was the closest. » (rotate)

The spiritual and immaterial dimension of the artist is also highlighted with the exhibition of his “Pneumatic Rocket” from 1962. This project, which he produced in small format, was originally intended to go to the space, and had to destroy itself there. According to his wife, Yves Klein, saw the aftermath as the possibility of having« the largest workshop in the world, which can be considered the space.»

The exhibition therefore explores the personal dimension of Yves Klein’s work despite the public nature of his works. The testimonies of his relatives or the exhibition of works by his parents therefore allow us to penetrate as closely as possible into the spirit of this artist who is still very present and influential through his heritage in the artistic sphere of the 21st century.
