Garland’s point total was for a brief period on Sunday the most in the NBA by a single player this season, surpassing the 49 points scored by Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies against the Houston Rockets on October 21.

About an hour later, Joel Embiid scored 59 for Philadelphia in a 105-98 win over the Utah Jazz.

Garland, whose 51 points are also a career high, made two free throws with 8.3 seconds remaining to pull Cleveland within 126-124, but Russell made it 127-124 from the free throw line. Kevin Love called out the kickoff and Taurean Prince hit two free throws to secure the win.

The Cavaliers, who lost for the fourth straight game, were without injured All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen. Mitchell sat out with a sprained right ankle, while Allen did not play with a sore left ankle.
