2nd league: BW Linz stays close to leader St. Pölten

In the Linz stadium, Manuel Maranda (18th), Fabian Windhager (46th) and Fabian Neumayr (84th) scored the tenth win of the season for Blau Weiß against Vienna, who overwintered in sixth place. Milos Jovicic (13′), Michael Liendl from the penalty spot (30′) and Luca Hassler (57′) scored for GAK in the Merkur Arena in Graz. Luca Hassler (57th) scored the consolation goal for the tail light from Kapfenberg.

St. Pölten had replaced SV Horn at the top of the table on Friday. The club from the provincial capital celebrated a convincing 4-0 win in the Lower Austria derby at SKU Amstetten and benefited from Horner’s 2-1 defeat at FAC. In Amstetten, the guests quickly made a preliminary decision. St. Pölten clearly dominated the initial phase and was already 3-0 up after 21 minutes.

Montnor puts together a double pack in the Lower Austria derby

Jaden Montnor opened after Luis Hartwig’s Stangl pass (6′), hit the bar once (10′) and also scored the third goal (21′). In between, Hartwig converted an ideal cross from Thomas Salamon with a header (14th). Only immediately before the break did Amstetten become a threat twice (39′, 41’/Stange), but after the restart SKN struck again. Montnor scored from an acute angle for the third time that evening (51st).

“I am very happy for the whole team. The key to success was hard training and following the coach’s instructions. We’re on the right track and we want to continue on that path,” Montnor said after the game. SKN trainer Stephan Helm was also happy: “I am very happy to win the winter crown because it is a sign of good work. What is more important, however, is that we are on the right track. We have always developed in the right direction in the calendar year. Now it’s time to keep working hard. We must remain humble.”

Montnor puts together a triple pack

In the 51st minute, Jaden Montnor made the final decision with his third goal to make it 4-0.

Thanks to a strong autumn, St. Pölten took the winter crown with 16 out of a possible 18 points from the last six games. Stephan Helm’s team is now one point ahead of BW Linz and two points ahead of the previous leader Horn, who deservedly missed out in Vienna-Floridsdorf.

Horn loses at FAC

Albin Gashi (10th) put the Lower Austrians in the lead after winning the ball and quickly switching over. FAC managed to equalize with the help of Horn goalkeeper Fabian Ehmann. Ehmann shot Marcel Monsberger in an attempt to clear, the ball bounced to Flavio, who kept calm and scored coolly (20′). After a corner kick, Monsberger (31st) put the Floridsdorfer in the lead. FAC had everything under control after the break and were unlucky when Paolino Bertaccini (79′) hit the crossbar, but after the last four games without a win they celebrated a complete success again.

Lafnitz celebrates victory in Derby

In the Styrian derby, SV Lafnitz easily defeated the amateurs from Sturm Graz 5:1. The match winner was Jurica Poldrugac with a triple pack to lead 3-0. The Croatian first converted a cross (31′), thundered a free kick into the net just before the break (45’+1′) and increased the lead to 3-0 with a goal in the cross corner (49′). Poldrugac has scored six goals in the last four games. Stefan Gölles (51′) made it 4-0 before Moritz Wels scored the consolation goal (59′). Gölles fixed the final score (70th).

In the storm, the only 16-year-old goalkeeper Elias Lorenz came on to replace the excluded Luka Maric shortly before the break. Maric knocked Daniel Gremsl off his feet and had to go into the dressing room with a red card (42′). Lorenz conceded two goals with the first two shots on his goal, but had no chance.

Admira loses in Landerl’s debut

Admira lost 1-0 on Rolf Landerl’s coaching debut at FC Liefering. Salzburg dominated the first half, but the Lower Austrians had the best chance. Patrick Schmidt failed with a penalty to goalkeeper Jonas Krumrey (39th). In the 51st minute, Liefering deservedly took the lead, Karim Konate scored in the cross corner and thus secured the win.

Forward Steyr got their first win in the eighth away game of the season with a 2-0 win in Dornbirn. In the 65th minute, Dornbirn missed a hand penalty through Leo Mätzler, which goalkeeper Florian Eres fended off. That took revenge in the finish. Tobias Pellegrini gave Steyr the lead (83′), Alem Pasic secured victory with a header (86′). For the first time this season, the Upper Austrians did not concede a goal and improved to 13th place.

The last round before the winter break ends on Sunday (10.30 a.m., live on ORF Sport+) with the “small” derby between Rapid II and the Young Violets. It will continue from February 24, 2023.
