Panama City, Nov 12 (EFE) .- The Club Atlético Independiente de La Chorrera (CAI) defeated Club Deportivo Universitario this Saturday 2 goals to 1 in extra time and was crowned champion of the Clausura 2022 tournament of the Panamanian League of Football (LPF).
The university team began to press the accelerator from minute 1, when Joseph Cox had a centered ball from Everardo Rose but the ball was kept by the CAI goalkeeper, César Samudio.
That first warning from the university students paid off in a play at minute 5. In a drop from Rose, he was shot down by Samudio and the referee decreed the foul and the penalty.
At minute 7, Joseph Cox, with a charge to the right post, defeated Samudio and made it 0-1 on the scoreboard.
With the goal, the CAI team looked somewhat unfocused, they had the ball, but their game was erratic and without bringing danger to the rival goal.
In the first part of the game, CAI, the highest scoring team in the tournament, did not take a shot off the goalkeeper of Universitario, the Colombian Aldair Armedo.
The last goal-scented play of the first half was in Cox’s boots, who received a ball from Jamel González, but his shot went wide.
In the second half, CAI came out with everything, looking for a tie. At minute 52, the newly admitted Luis Torres had a free kick, but his shot went wide of the goal of the university team.
At minute 60, a free kick again by Torres found the right foot of Gilberto Hernández, to dislodge Arnedo and make it 1-1 on the table.
Cox had the clearest chance of extending the score at minute 64, but his shot was covered by goalkeeper Samudio, drowning out the goal cry of the university team.
At minute 68, Mario Carmona could not head the goal with distance, after a center by David Álvarez.
At minute 75, Arnedo covered a powerful shot by Jorge Serrano, the university students were saved.
CAI had the last goal play in the 93rd minute, in a shot by Víctor Ávila, Arnedo saved his goal again.
With the tie at one, the Panamanian soccer champion in the Clausura 2022 in Panama was defined in overtime.
The first extra time had no emotions, both teams played not to make a mistake, thinking of defining everything from the penalty spot.
The second half was final. At minute 110 Cox received a pass from Luis Cañate, but the shot was stopped by César Samudio in two stages.
CAI’s winning goal came from an error at minute 118. Colombian David Álavrez lost a ball under pressure from Ángel Valverde, who passed the ball to Víctor Ávila, who made it 2-1 on the scoreboard from the right.
Mario Carmona had the tie for the university team, after goalkeeper Samudio released a ball, but his shot flew over the goal.
With 120 minutes completed and two more extras, the referee blew the final whistle and CAI de La Chorrera is the Panamanian soccer champion in the Clausura 2022 edition.
