The Yellow Tigers have closed their last World Cup group match with a clear victory. Against Cameroon, the Belgians never really got into trouble and won in 3 sets: 25-8, 25-19 and 25-14

After the stunt win against the Netherlands, the Yellow Tigers were overflowing with confidence for their last group match against Cameroon.

The Belgians immediately started the game well. Although Cameroon was very easily led to the slaughter in the first set. After barely fifteen minutes of play, the score was 25-8.

In the second set we got to see a different Cameroon. Led by the powerful main attacker Adiana, the Cameroon women fought back into the game. The Tigers piled up the sloppiness, but eventually also pulled set 2 over the line: 25-19.

The third set was also more balanced and both teams treated the supporters present to some great points at times. Yet in the end it was Belgium – with a strong Marlies Janssens – who took the victory all in all easily.

The Yellow Tigers are thus moving towards the next round with 12 points, where Argentina and top players China, Brazil and Japan are waiting.

Janssens: “Looking match by match in the next round”

Marlies Janssens played a strong game today and also scored the most points (14). “We played very well today, this is a collective victory.”

“We knew we had to be attentive for this match. The first set also went very well, but after that Cameroon showed that they have many qualities offensively.”

“In the end it is good that we win 3-0. At the beginning of this World Cup we never thought that we would win 4 matches in this group. Especially the victory against the Netherlands came as a surprise.”

“Now comes the second round and we have to look match by match”, Janssens kept his feet on the ground.

Coach Vande Broek: “Never expected to take 12 points in the group”

National coach Gert Vande Broek looked back with satisfaction on the performance of his team after the match. “Our first set was perfect and then you know in advance that there will be some decrompression.”

“We recovered well in the third set, but in this situation you know that you will not play the perfect game, but you can do your job perfectly. Our job was to win 3-0 and we did that today. “

It sounded beforehand that the match against Cameroon might be the ideal opportunity to let stronghold Britt Herbots rest. In the end nothing came of it. “We really need Britt and that’s why we decided to let them play.”

“That way we didn’t want the game to last longer than necessary. Britt

has never gotten so few balls, so the physical and mental load
wasn’t very high today.”

“We now have 4 games in 6 days. That rapid succession will play a role. Everyone is fit at the moment and let’s hope it stays that way.”

Argentina, Brazil, China and Japan await in the next round. Can the national coach already make some predictions? Brazil is the volleyball country par excellence, and we have never been able to beat that. So it’s a tough opponent, but we’re going to give 200% our chance.”

“Then comes a very crucial game against Argentina and after that we can talk.”
