In a close match, both players initially conceded two breaks in the first set before Niemeier lost her service game for the third time when the score was 5:6.
In the second round, Niemeier missed two breakballs when the score was 4: 4 and thus the great chance to turn the tide. After 1:53 hours, the Italian, three years her senior, converted her first match point.
This season, Niemeier started at number 130 in the world rankings, although there were no points for her triumphant progress to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, so far she has climbed almost 70 places.
