World Judo Championships: World Champion Wagner bows to Böhm

World champion Anna-Maria Wagner lost the pinnacle of German judo at the world championships in Tashkent to European champion Alina Böhm and thus missed the defense of her title. In the quarter-finals of the under 78 kg category, Böhm (Heubach), 24, won against Wagner (Ravensburg), two years her senior, and will face the afternoon in the semi-finals the double world champion Mayra Aguiar (Brazil).

Wagner, who bowed out after 3:39 minutes due to the third penalty, then squandered her chance for bronze in the consolation round. The Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist lost to Japanese Olympic champion Shori Hamada, as she had already done in the semi-finals of the 2021 Summer Games, and therefore failed to qualify for the small final .

So far, the German Judo Federation (DJB) has won a medal in Tashkent thanks to Katharina Menz (opening day silver in the under 48 kg category).
