Why has Ante Rebic’s goal sparked controversy in Italy?

AC Milan News – Ante Rebic’s goal in the Empoli vs Milan match last night seemed to have caused controversy when Sandro Tonali threw a throw-in 10.64 meters from where the ball went out of play.

The Rossoneri sealed an important 3-1 win at Tuscan soil despite injuries to many key players, including Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez. Ante Rebic returned to action and broke the deadlock in the second half, but the Croatian’s goal caused controversy in Italy when Tonali threw a throw-in to Rebic, 10.64 meters from where the ball came out.

Milan boss Stefano Pioli passed the ball to the Italian midfielder, who quickly threw in, finding Leao beyond every Empoli defender. What is clear, the Portuguese striker can not be considered offside.

Empoli coaches Paolo Zanetti and Pioli argued on the touchline following Rebic’s goal which also caused controversy on social media, while VAR could not intervene.

“I don’t really look at his position, it’s usually the referee who stops the game if you’re wrong. The goal came from this… a sneaky throw-in. It was the right thing to do at the time,” Tonali told DAZN last night.

After all, controversy is a part of football. With technology as advanced as VAR and nothing has been annulled, Ante Rebic’s goal is undisputed, especially if we look at how Milan were harmed by the referee last season.
