Messages in several languages, between a mosaic of flags and youthful faces of all kinds, more than a thousand athletes from 370 educational institutions in 11 countries offered the “yes, I protest” to inaugurate the second edition of these Games, who had been through problems in the face of the pandemic and difficult economic conditions.
Announced in 2019 to be held in 2020, it was postponed due to the pandemic and scheduled for 2022, within the framework of the centenary of the Autonomous University of Yucatan.
Yesterday, several sports came into action early on the main Yucatecan stages, such as indoor volleyball at the Polifórum Zamná, indoor soccer at the “Socorro Cerón Herrera” Multigym and soccer at the “Carlos Iturralde Rivero”. There will also be chess, athletics, basketball, tae kwon do, archery, weightlifting, judo and soccer, almost all of them in both branches. In association football, their matches will be selective towards the University World Cup. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, United States, Haiti, Peru, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Mexico have athletes in the event.
Inauguration of the FISU America Games
In the afternoon, dozens of university athletes gathered at the XXI Century Convention Center for the opening ceremony.
It was inaugurated by the president of the International Federation of University Sports (FISU), Leonz Eder, and the head of FISU America, Alim Maluf Neto, with messages from Carlos Sáenz Castillo, director of IDEY; José de Jesús Williams, rector of the Uady; and Manuel Merodio Reza, presidents of the Student Sports Council.
The chess player Magdalena Matú Carballo made the sports oath for the athletes and the coaches, the Uady weightlifters, David Carrillo Baranda and Ileana Paredes González.
