Saudi Arabia Golf Federation president backtracks on majors

Two days after the publication of the New Yorker article in which he claimed to want to create his own majors in the event of the exclusion of LIV players from grand slam tournaments, Majed Al-Sorour explains that his remarks were misinterpreted.

In a statement the president of the Saudi Arabia Golf Federation (Saudi Golf), in the center of the photo surrounded by Donald Trump and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, wanted to defuse the controversy born of remarks he would have made during an exchange with a journalist from the New Yorker.

Majed Al-Sorour said he intended to create major tournaments if the authorities banned LIV players from the 4 major annual events: The Augusta Masters, the PGA Championship, the US Open and The Open.

Perhaps worried about having pushed things a little too far and the possible counterproductive effects of such comments, he explained that his words had been misinterpreted by the journalist.

“I had a casual chat with a New Yorker reporter at the LIV tournament in Boston a few weeks ago, during which I expressed my frustration at seeing LIV Golf players kicked out by the PGA Round. Regarding the Majors, autonomous and independent tournaments of the LIV, I have the greatest respect. The Majors represent history, heritage, the essence of competition and honour. My words have been misinterpreted and my point of view distorted.” he indicates.

Anxious not to offend any institution while the debate concerning the possibility of allocating world points to LIV tournaments continues behind the scenes, the chairman of the board of directors of LIV Golf Investment therefore advocates appeasement.

“I am here to make LIV Golf Investissement’s projects come true so that its strategic orientations to build teams, develop the game and defend the rights of players are carried out. It’s my only interest.” conclut Majed Al-Sorour.
