Manchester United appeared convincing to beat the Sheriff with a score of 3-0 in the Europa League Group E match. Cristiano Ronaldo is back to score one goal.
The MU vs Sheriff duel was held at Old Trafford on Friday (10/28/2022) in the morning WIB. The Red Devils took a one-goal lead in the first half through Diogo Dalot.
Meanwhile, two other MU goals were born after halftime. Marcus Rashford and Ronaldo scored consecutively to complete MU’s dominance.
Victory over Sheriff ensures Manchester United finish in the top two in the Europa League Group E standings. MU ranks second with 12 points, three points adrift of Real Sociedad while ensuring a place in the playoffs.
In the last match, Manchester United will face Sociedad to determine the group winners. United need a win by two goals to finish top and qualify automatically for the round of 16.
The course of the match
United controlled the game from the first minute. A number of opportunities were created. Antony’s shot from area D was caught by goalkeeper Maksym Koval, then Cristiano Ronaldo’s header flew slightly over the Sheriff’s goal.
Another opportunity was created by MU after Antony’s thrust was continued by Bruno Fernandes with a kick from the edge of the penalty box. However, the ball is still wide of the opponent’s goal post.
Not long after, an opportunity again missed MU. Cooperation of Victor Lindelof and Fernandes ended with a header that led to Ronaldo. It’s a shame that the finish from close range can still be parried by Koval.
MU’s deadlock was finally broken before halftime. Diogo Dalot scored to make it 1-0 in the 44th minute. From a corner shot by Christian Eriksen on the left flank, Dalot met the ball with a header that managed to break into the Sheriff’s net.
After halftime, MU continued its dominance. Cristiano Ronaldo swerved then fired a right-footed shot into the top corner of the Sheriff’s goal but the ball was still off the mark. After that Ronaldo broke into the opponent’s goal but was disallowed for offside.
The second goal that MU has been waiting for is also born. In the 65th minute, Marcus Rashford changed the score to 2-0 for MU’s advantage.
MU build attacks from outside the penalty box. Short passes involving Eriksen and Scott McTominay were ended by Luke Shaw with a cross into the middle of the box and then Rashford headed home to beat Koval.
MU efforts to create a third goal is still in vain. Rashford’s curling shot was saved by Koval, as was Garnacho’s shot.
In the 81st minute, Cristiano Ronaldo finally scored! Bruno Fernandes’ cross from the right was headed by Ronaldo but Koval was able to ward off. Ronaldo immediately hit the rebound with a shot from close range, making it 3-0 for MU.
Six minutes later, MU almost got a fourth goal. A cross found Donny van de Beek, but his flick at the near post only nestled on the outside of the Sheriff’s goal.
In injury time, MU opportunity was raw in the hands of Koval after brushing off McTominay’s header from close range. The game is over, the score is 3-0 for the MU advantage to survive.
