It goes very fast with Remco Evenepoel (22). World champion in one month, married, honeymooning and moving to Spain. “The region around Alicante is a really beautiful area to train. The weather is good all year round, so it’s ideal for my basics and winter training. I also find a training course that is a bit heavier than the Ardennes, which is also necessary because I want to keep aiming for the big tours and the difficult climb stage races. Last year I already wintered in that region. Back then it was still at a hotel, but with a permanent place it will go even better. We already bought the apartment last year, but it has only been ready to live in for a few weeks now. After our honeymoon in the Maldives, we will be in Belgium for a few more days to arrange and pack everything, and then leave for Alicante by car,” says Evenepoel.

A move abroad has been in Evenepoel’s mind for some time. Three years ago, the Monaco track was on the table, but that story fell through. Evenepoel prefers Spain. Far enough from all the attention in Belgium. “The most dangerous thing will be that everyone will want a piece of me. We will have to keep that under control, so far it has worked well. But November and December will be the most difficult months in that regard. Then the TV shows come around the holidays, but we’re just going to focus on cycling. I’m going to focus on my daily life, not on something like a singing competition. The people who want something from me won’t know where I am or what I’m doing. That should help a bit,” Evenepoel says in The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club Podcast.

Please note Evenepoel does not intend to neglect his ties with Belgium and Schepdaal. In Belgium he still lives in his parental home in Schepdaal, but it is also the intention to soon have his own home nearby.

Evenepoel does not want to reveal what his apartment in Spain looks like yet, but he does have plans. In recent months he often stayed in the Hotel Synchrosfera in the Alicante region. A hotel with altitude rooms. He is toying with the idea of ​​installing such a height chamber himself. “You earn back the expenses you make for Synchrosfera with such a room in your own house. So we have already thought about that, there are plans for it, but then the architect will have to visit again…”
