RD wins 32 medals at the University Pan American Games

EL NUEVO DIARIO, SANTO DOMINGO.- The Ministry of Sports and Recreation (Miderec) received with great joy the delegation that represented us at the Pan American University Sports Championship, held in Mérida, Mexico, in which Dominican athletes won 32 medals , five of them gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze.

The Dominican Republic, with this brilliant participation, finished in third place in the general medal table, only behind Mexico and Brazil. The coaches of the different sports did a great job.

The Vice Minister of Sports Franklin de la Mota represented Minister Francisco Camacho at a breakfast offered to the members of the delegation and which took place this Thursday at the Miderec headquarters.

He was also accompanied by the Vice Minister of Sports Kennedy Vargas and the immortal of Sports Heyda Joaquín, director of provincial sports directors of the portfolio.

De la Mota affirmed that the Government of President Luis Abinader and the Ministry of Sports headed by Camacho feel highly satisfied with the extraordinary work carried out by the judo, athletics and taekwondo athletes in this Pan American University.

“All the facilities were provided so that they could compete in Mexico and they have returned victorious, that is why we affirm that we will continue to provide more support every day so that university sports shine,” said De la Mota.

Roque García, director of University Sports, who led the delegation made up of 25 athletes, thanked all the support he received from the Minister of Sports, Camacho, and his team of collaborators so that the delegation can exhibit this great success today.

Athletes thank gesture

Multi-gold medalists Franquelo Pérez, a native of Jimaní, and Omaria Ramírez, in athletics and judo, respectively, thanked Miderec for welcoming them with breakfast at the athletes’ house, which is the headquarters of the portfolio.

Franquelo won three medals in the 100 and 200 meter dash and in the 4×400 mixed relay; while Ramírez obtained two gold medals in different categories of judo.

“We gave the best of ourselves and raised the tricolor flag high, we left here as a national delegation and that’s how we came back, but loaded with medals,” Franquelo and Ramírez stressed.
