This is how they face the season
I don’t know if it’s been a great summer, or if you’re all excited about the return of the NBA, but I can’t help but feel optimistic about the teams that make up the Atlantic Division. First it was the Knicks, and after them it was the turn of the Nets and Raptors, who for me are fixed in the playoffs. But now it is the turn of the Philadelphia 76ers and the look of a champion team that has been given to them.
And it is that the summer period could not start better in Philly with the announced renewal of James Harden, who decided to forgive money for Daryl Morey to shore up other positions in the squad. And with this small effort, the leader has been able to close the hiring of PJ Tucker, Danuel House, or more recently that of Montrezl Harrell after being acquitted of his affairs with marijuana.
Of Harden lately only negative aspects have been highlighted towards him, but a point in his favor for the commitment he has shown with these Sixers and the great work he has done this summer to arrive in top form and incidentally lose a few extra kilos that was dragging Without a doubt, La Barba will be the most differential player with permission from Joel Embiid, since the game and the rhythm of the matches will start from his hands.
If last year, thick as he was, he averaged 20-10 with the cap, imagine what he will be able to do in this coming course. I don’t want to say that he will reach your level prime from Houston, but I dare say that he will once again be that destabilizing player who decides the games. I have no doubt.
Embiid the Beast
And with the Cameroonian center I allow myself to make a point and aside because we are possibly facing one of the most unique players in the entire league with the permission of Jokic, Durant or Antetokounmpo. Joel Embiid, unstoppable inside, great defender and agile with his feet to play both post and outside. He has it all. And also a great character that makes him a total winner.
However, I will not leave here without hitting him with a stick because more than once he would be more handsome if he were silent. First there were his incendiary statements against Ben Simmons that we already know everything that unleashed that. And last year he made the same mistake again, only this time it was against James Harden and his controversial series against the Miami Heat. Does anyone really advise you? Those things better from doors into locker rooms, my friend.
I will not finish my analysis of Embiid without affirming that he will once again be present among the candidates for the best awards of the year, such as the MVP of the regular season; the prize for the Best Defender or the Best Quintets of the Course. Embiid is an unstoppable force of nature, and if he drives away the ghosts of injury, I’m predicting another 30-10-4 under his belt.
the secondary block
As the Sixers are not going to survive Embiid and Harden, Daryl Morey and his board have managed to build a compact and compensated block in practically all positions. They have a good handful of secondary notables, such as Tobias Harris, Tyrese Maxey, Matisse Thybulle, De’Anthony Melton, Furkan Korkmaz, PJ Tucker or Montrezl Harrell himself.
The arrival of Milton from Memphis seems like a great success, as it improves what has left: Danny Green. The veteran was already in his last hours and was practically doomed to catch and shoot from the corner. For his part, PJ Tucker has already shown that he is an elite defender and despite his 37 years he still has a lot to say here. If I have a single ‘but’ to his signing, since they seem to me to be somewhat bulky numbers (three seasons and close to 30 million).
And from Tucker’s veteran we move on to the youth and the tremendous future that Maxey has in these Sixers. After Embiid and Harden, he should pick up the scoring witness instead of a come-down Tobias Harris. The young point guard ended up exploding last year and practically doubling all of his stats. And presumably this year he will continue to grow assuming that Doc Rivers gives him an even more important role.
But the list still does not end here and there is also Thybulle, an excellent defender who will surely end up finishing the games along with Embiid, Harden, Maxey and Tucker; the seven years that a Furkan Korkmaz has been in the team and that this is always very important for any aspiring team; or the additions of Danuel House, an old acquaintance of Morey and Harden, and of a Harrell that we remember a little over two years ago was chosen as the Best Sixth Man in the league and who could be a very good substitute for Embiid, since the points and the passion for this sport falls out of his hands.
the player to watch
Joel Embiid will return to the spotlight in Philadelphia, but James Harden still has a lot to say at 33 years old. As we said, he is committed to the team, he trusts the project that Daryl Morey has set up and has also done his part to close his new contract. A new contract that has made it possible to close other contracts of relative importance.
Harden got carried away last year. His stage in absentia took its toll on him first in Brooklyn, and then in Philadelphia when the transfer of him by Simmons was confirmed. He was overweight and totally out of shape. But someone must have explained to him that he wasn’t going anywhere this way, and this summer he has been very active in his training, and he has presented an enviable physique for the new season that he is about to start.
As Doc Rivers recently said, Harden should be a ‘Magic Johnson’ but more of a scorer. And I’m sure he can do it. Of fundamentals he is left over. Being out of shape he averaged 20-10. How much will he be capable of in this one? The sky is the limit for one of the best scorers the NBA has produced in the last two decades.
