Head of competitive sports Dirk Schimmelpfennig and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) have agreed on a leave of absence. The association confirmed this at the request of the German Press Agency.

First, the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (FAZ) reported about it. Schimmelpfennig’s contract, which ran until the end of the year, had not been extended, so his departure was already certain.

DOSB President Thomas Weikert called this “a normal process” and said: “In view of the great challenges facing competitive sport, we came to the conclusion that we needed a new personal impetus.” It had originally been agreed that Schimmelpfennig would carry out his duties until the end of the year. But October 27th was already the last DOSB working day of the official.

The former sports director of the German Table Tennis Association came to the DOSB in March 2015. One of his most important tasks is the implementation of the controversial competitive sports reform. At the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, Tokyo and Beijing, the 60-year-old was also Chef de Mission of the German team.
