United – with Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting line-up – took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute. The assist came from Christian Eriksen and the finishing touch was for striker Marcus Rashford. It turned out to be the winning goal. Ronaldo had some opportunities after an hour of play, but the star was not sharp enough in his finish.

The victory of the club from Manchester certainly did not come without a fight. Especially in the final phase, Ten Hag’s team had to pull out all the stops to get the three points over the line. David de Gea – not included in Spain’s World Cup squad – produced one world save after another.
