The British Phil Read, seven times motorcycling world champion -two of them in the queen category-, died this Thursday at the age of 83, as announced by Yamaha, the brand for which he ran.

“Yamaha is very sad to learn that Phil Read, who was the first to win a world title for the brand, died this morning (Thursday) at his home in Canterbury” in England, the Japanese manufacturer said in a statement.

Born on January 1, 1939 in Luton, near London, Phil Read won his first races in road competitions such as the Manx Grand Prix or the Ulster 200, in the early 1960s. the Isle of Man in 1961, winning the 350 race.

In 1964 he won his first World Championship at the controls of a Yamaha 250, a title that was also the first for the Japanese brand.

He won other titles in the 250 and 350, before becoming double world champion in the premier class -then 500-, in 1973 and 1974, with Italian MV Agusta motorcycles.

He disputed his last race in 1983, at the age of 43 in the famous Isle of Man TT.
