Kevin Suárez and Lucía González win the cyclocross “Villa de Gijón”

The Cantabrian Kevin Suárez and the Asturian Lucía González prevailed in the twelfth edition of the “Villa de Gijón” Cyclocross Trophy that was played yesterday at the Las Mestas de Gijón Sports Complex with a participation, in the total of the categories, superior to the 300 runners from France, Belgium, England, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Spain.

The Nesta NMR runner achieved victory with considerable authority, since he completed the course in 1 hour and 52 seconds, 45 less than the second classified, the local Mario Junquera (Unicaja Banco Gijón) and 56 less than the third classified, Tomás Misser (El Corredor), who at 48 was in the leading group all the time. In the women’s race, the winner was local Lucía González (Nesta NMR), who completed the course in 46:48 minutes, followed just two seconds behind by her teammate Sofía Rodríguez and Sara Cueto (Unicaja Banco Gijón), who She entered one minute and 23 seconds behind the winning cyclist. The Gijon trophy also served to open the Spanish Cup in this modality, which is why there was a great participation in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Before the elite trials those of the junior category were disputed. In the men’s podium was composed of Carlos Gámez, (Irontech Tecnic Mendiz Ambisis), Mateo Garnier (Pays de Louceac, France) and Odei Muñoz (Fundibide Eselle-Sebal) and in the women’s by Aroa Otero (Froiz Supermarket), Uxia Soto Froiz Supermarket) and Maria Filgueiras (Santome de Piñeiro).

Previously, on Saturday, the Las Mestas Trophy was played, a prelude to the international event, in which Kevin Suárez also won, who used a time of 1:01:40 to complete the 26-kilometre route, being seconded on the podium by the Cantabrian Julio Pérez (Escriban Sports) and the Catalan Tomás Misser.

In the women’s event, the victory corresponded to the Asturian Lucía González (Nesta MMR) followed by the Basque Sofía Rodríguez and the also Asturian Sara Cueto (Unicaja Banco-Ayuntamiento de Gijón).

The “Villa de Gijón” Trophy has been the first to equalize the cash prizes for the male and female categories, something highlighted by the several-time champion of Spain and winner of the trophy last year, Aida Nuño, current General Director of Sports of the Principality of Asturias.
