Beaten by the wire at the recent Worlds in Tashkent, Nils Stump signed an unexpected feat in Abu Dhabi. Winner in the under 73 kg category, the 25-year-old from Zurich gave Swiss judo its first success in a Grand Slam tournament.
Bronze medalist at the Europeans 2021, Nils Stump had failed in the second round against the reigning world champion at the Tashkent Worlds in early October. The Zurich native, who had surgery on his shoulder after the Tokyo Olympics, pulled out all the stops in Abu Dhabi to win his 5 fights. He beat in the final the vice-champion of Europe, the Italian Giovanni Esposito.
