Joan Laporta rules out the signing of Artur Mas’s former head of press

BarcelonaAs ARA has been able to confirm, Joan Maria Piqué, who was negotiating to become part of Barça’s communication department, will finally not make the jump to the Camp Nou. The talks have not crystallized and the former press officer of the former president of the Generalitat Artur Mas will not sign for the club and will not take the vacant position of Sandra Hors, in charge of international communication that Arístides Maillol has left to accept a other job offer.

Sources from the Blaugrana offices tell ARA that Piqué’s entry could mean a restructuring of the department. It wasn’t 100% clear that his duties were exactly the same as the position called for. They also assure that there are more candidates to fill the vacancy of Hors – who has left for Vueling – and that Piqué’s profile has finally been discarded due to “professional criteria”. Other sources point out that, after the news of the possible signing was published, Laporta received internal reports that advised against the addition.

This Wednesday afternoon, Piqué himself offered his version of events in a tweet on Twitter. “I received an offer, at the initiative of the club, which we agreed and closed, with a pre-agreement signed, and with a great desire to help Barça. It has not been completed. I am very grateful to the president; thank you for the trust and good luck in the project”, he wrote, thus confirming that the negotiation existed and pointed out that it was Barça who initiated it.

Until a few days ago, Piqué was director general of Analysis and Strategic Planning of Foreign Action under Minister Victòria Alsina, but he had also held positions during the period of Carles Puigdemont – with whom he also collaborated in the ‘exile’ and Quim Torra. At the Ministry of the Interior he had worked with Miquel Buch and also with Ramon Tremosa during his brief time at Empresa.

The recent government crisis has prompted changes in the councils and Piqué had a quick job alternative available to him, Barça, but the negotiation did not end well for his interests. The journalist from Lleida, trained at the University of Navarra and known for the white glasses he wore a few years ago, will not enter a department headed by fellow journalist Àlex Santos since Laporta won the elections of March 7, 2021.

In fact, Santos was the one who managed the relationship with the media throughout the Estimem el Barça candidacy campaign. Jordi Finestres also came to work at the club with the change of government, in this case assigned to the area of presidency, although he is closely related to the day-to-day in the field of communication. Santos and/or Finestres usually accompany the Blaugrana expedition in all the trips of the first football team.
