The women’s national volleyball team was beaten 3-1 by Brazil in the semifinal of the World Cup and was therefore eliminated from the tournament. It was the match between the top two national teams in the world ranking and between two of the big favorites for the final victory. They had already met in the group stage, and Brazil had won by three sets of two in Italy’s only defeat in the tournament. In the semi-final, played in the Netherlands, Italy again suffered from the almost flawless defense of the Brazilians and made too many mistakes in attack. She managed to win the second set, but then she lost two in a row, the last of which with a pretty clear 25-19.

Brazil will therefore play the World Cup final on Saturday evening against reigning champion Serbia, while Italy will play for third place on Saturday afternoon against the United States.
