Inning x Inning live: Manchado ties Game 2 of the Division Series between Padres and Dodgers

The Dodgers lost Wednesday to the San Diego Padres 5-3 in Game 2 of the Division Series on another cold night at Dodger Stadium, so the matchup between these two Southern California clubs is now tied at one game. per side in a best-of-five series that will move to Petco Park in San Diego on Friday.

The Dodgers appeared to be on fire winning Game 1 on Tuesday, but Manny Machado homered off starter Clayton Kershaw, then drove in another run, to be an all-night nightmare for the hosts.

Kershaw took the mound for Game 2, making his 31st start in a postseason game, but he didn’t get off to a good start as he struggled in almost every inning. Kershaw allowed six hits, three earned runs and a home run. He also struck out six on 80 pitches, 55 of them for strikes.

“I had traffic all day. It could be worst. He had to get out of trouble almost every inning. I also made mistakes, like the ball to Manny,” Kershaw said, referring to Machado’s home run in the first inning. “But it could have been worse.”

It was Kershaw’s first playoff appearance since 2020 as he sat out last year due to an elbow injury and missed all of October.

“He wasn’t that effective, it was tough for him all night,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged after the loss.

The Dodgers went 0-8 when they had players in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. They also didn’t score again after the third inning.

The Padres went ahead in the first inning on Machado’s home run to left field. The Dodgers responded with their own home run in that same inning courtesy of Freddie Freeman.

The hosts went ahead on a Max Muncy homer in the second inning, but then blew the lead on Machado’s double to left field and then another play by Jake Cronenworth put the Padres up 3-2.

Trea Turner homered for the second straight night in the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.

However, the Venezuelan Brusdar Graterol, who was the losing pitcher, got into trouble and Jurickson Profar drove in the 4-3. In the eighth inning, Cronenworth homered to extend the lead for good to 5-3.

Padres first baseman Yu Darvish, a former Dodger, had a good start, as usual against his former team, with five innings, in which he allowed seven hits, three earned runs, seven strikeouts and three home runs, with 99 pitches, 63 of they strike.

“I think we had a good plan for Yu. We had a couple of situations over two innings to get a lead and we didn’t,” Roberts said.

On Friday the series resumes in San Diego for Game 3 (5:37 pm FS1).

“It’s nice to bring a couple of games to San Diego. It feels great,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said.
