How many World Series trophies are there?

With the most important event in Major League Baseball (MLB) about to start this week, Bolavip tells you a little about the history of the trophy for the Major League champion.

The 2022 World Series is about to startand its two protagonists will have their well-deserved reward for a long and demanding season: Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies will have a chance to fight for the Commissioner’s Trophy.

The current trophy Major League Baseball (MLB) it’s almost a sports icon in the United Stateswith a modern design and the particularity that, as of 1994, the league commissioner delivers it to the champion team.

Dauvray Cup (1887-1893)

For the first winners of the most famous baseball league in the world the Dauvray Cup was awardednamed in commemoration of the Broadway actress, Helen Dauvray, one of the great stars of the time.

Dauvray married John Montgomery, New York Yankees shortstop and eventual Hall of Famer, in a tie that was announced during the 1887 World Series. Boston Beaneaters (today Atlanta Braves), with three trophies, was the top winner of this stage.

Temple Cup (1894-1897)

After their initial trophy, the champions of Major League Baseball (MLB) received the Temple Cup, whose greatest winners were one of the founders of the league: Baltimore Orioles, with two medals achieved in that time.

The era without trophies (1898-1966)

For most of the 20th century, the MLB did not award a trophy to its winners. Obviously, awards were given to all those who had participated in the championship (from players to props), but it was just the championship rings. New York Yankeeswith 20 pennants, dominated this stage.

The first Commissioner’s Trophy (1967-1999)

Although there is not much record of it, since the cup was delivered in the privacy of the team celebrations, the Commissioner’s Trophy began the year the Saint Louis Cardinals managed to win the World Series (1967).

After that, and playing an incredible 36 total championship games, New York Yankees would lift the new trophy five timesfollowed by Oakland Athleticswith four trophies won.

The modern Commissioner’s Trophy (2000-present)

In the year 2000, the MLB decided to renew its trophy in order to deliver a more modern version of one of the most coveted medals in all of sports. In the 21st century, it is the Boston Red Sox which dominated, with two titles.
