The home player promised to work hard. And she also sewed. And pretty sharp. In the two-hour duel, which she dominated in the ratio of 7:6, 6:4, she used a total of 42 winning strokes!

“I knew it would be difficult with Paula. She serves very well and it was shown in the match that it was difficult to break her. She didn’t mess up too much, she played a solid game and moved well,” assessed Kvitová, who is also not fully fit at the Ostravar Arena. She is still suffering from a cold, but that didn’t stop her from showing a possibly self-destructive combativeness to the grateful fans.

“Such matches are not good for my health, it’s not ideal for tennis either, but it’s played at home, and that’s something great. Today was a blast,” the intoxicating feeling of winning prevailed for her. Against Badosa, Kvitová celebrated her 60th victory over a player from the top 10.

“Additionally, I had a day off because I don’t know what I would do on the court on Tuesday. I just lay at home all day. I didn’t do anything at all,” she revealed.

However, the eight-year-younger rival did not give in cheaply. She deflected a total of seven match points. Six in one gamut during his presentation.

“But I didn’t think about it, I still had my service available. At the seventh match point, Paula killed my return… It was extremely difficult to serve. The last sets and exchanges were terribly demanding,” Kvitová described how her opponent’s spectators rose from their seats.

“People really pushed me forward, but they also supported good tennis, so they also applauded Paula and were very fair, I appreciate that.”

How the match would turn out if it went to three sets, Kvitová didn’t want to imagine.

“The opening tie break helped me a lot and I closed it in the second set. I appreciate the most that I managed it mentally,” said the heroine of the evening in a tired voice. At that moment, she didn’t care who she would play in the quarterfinals. It wasn’t until late in the evening that it became clear that she would face Jelena Rybakinová.
