In the beginning, there were nine Latvian hockey players in NHL training camps. Forwards Sandis Vilmanis and Eduards Tralmaks were the first to fail the competition. Well, Anson and Rubin have joined them. Raivis Anson signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in May. The fact that he will not be in the “Penguins” team was predictable, now the main thing for the 20-year-old forward is to establish himself in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton “Penguins” farm club, which plays in the American Hockey League (AHL).

The 24-year-old defenseman Kristians Rubins, who made his NHL debut last year, playing three matches for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has also been sent to the AHL. In the summer, Rubin did not reach a new agreement with “Maple Leafs”, but he was hired by another Canadian club – Ottawa “Senators”. At that time, it seemed like a good opportunity for Rubin to have a better bite of the NHL bread, but unexpectedly quickly he was sent to the farm club “Senators” of Belleville.

Rubin played in two of Ottawa’s five preseason test matches, losing both times, while Christian remained with a negative utility ratio. Rubin must continue to fight for a place under the NHL sun, and hopefully he will be given that opportunity as the season progresses.

Five of our players remain in the ranks of NHL clubs – goalkeepers Elvis Merzlikins, Artūrs Shilovs, forwards Teodors Bļugers, Rūdolfs Balcers and Zemgus Girgensons. Balcer scored the first goal in the shirt of the Florida Panthers, but his team lost to the Carolina Hurricanes 3:4 in the test match. Victory for Merzlikin, who made 34 saves to help the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals 2-1. The NHL season will start this week with two matches in Europe (in Prague), but in North America everything will start from October 11.
