EuroCup: Hamburg Towers shudder at 87:83 against Slask Wroclaw | Sports

That was scary!

The Towers had declared the EuroCup duel against Breslau to be a Halloween game. It turned out to be a chilling thriller.

In the end, Hamburg’s basketball players were able to win the first home win of the season on the international stage against the leaders from Poland with 87:83 (52:53). But they lost a 19-point lead by a hair’s breadth!

“We’re no longer a team that sticks our heads in the sand,” says coach Raoul Korner. “We were at a loss but not panicked and are able to stop bleeding.”

James Woodard (gastrointestinal) returned to the team. Nevertheless, the Hamburgers came 71 hours after the super win in the BBL against Bayern (81:79) in the game. But with poisonous defensive work, they found their way into the game and took control.

At halftime, the Towers were up 19 points.

But the third quarter was sheer horror – 11:28! The Towers were drained of blood, failed to hit the basket for five and a half minutes and gave up the ball six times. Result: a 0:17 run! Ice-cold shivers ran down the backs of the 1059 fans in the Inselpark.

Korner: “It was a disaster. That’s not rational.”

In the end, Captain Seth Hinrichs and top scorer Kendale McCullum (16 points) stood up, pulled the others along and secured the Zitter victory. “I said to myself: We’re not going to lose today,” McCullum said. Three seconds before the shot he converted two free throws and then stole the ball from Breslau.

The Bundesliga continues in Bamberg on Friday (6.30 p.m., Magenta Sport).
