    Physical activity and long-term conditions

    BJSM consensus statement

    While the benefits of physical activity for people living with a long-term illness (ALD) are well established, the risks are less well documented. One work aimed to establish, through expert consensus, clear statements for health professionals about the medical risks of physical activity for people living with a long-term condition.

    These statements answer the following questions :

    – Is increased physical activity safe for people living with one or more ALDs?

    – Are the symptoms and clinical syndromes associated with common ALDs worsened in the short or long term by increasing the level of physical activity?

    – What specific risks should healthcare professionals consider when advising symptomatic people with one or more ALDs to increase their level of physical activity?

    Results : Twenty-eight experts participated in the Delphi process and the results were published in the British journal of sports medicine. All statements achieved consensus, with final agreement between 88.5% and 96.5%. This consensus statement will contribute to the dissemination of clear and consistent risk messages throughout the health system will improve the confidence of people living with ALD in physical activity

    The shortage of teachers: an obstacle to universal education

    UNESCO

    On the occasion of World Teachers’ Day (05/10/22), UNESCO drew attention to the lack of teachers that affects many countries. In a press release, the organization warns of the current state of the profession:

    – There would be a shortage of 69 million teachers worldwide to ensure “universal basic education”;

    – secondary education in particular has to deal with a shortage estimated at 44.4 million teachers;

    – some countries are more affected by this phenomenon: this is the case of “low-income” countries;

    – nearly 26% of primary school teachers and 39% of secondary school teachers do not have the minimum qualifications required in low-income countries;

    – 6 countries out of 10 would pay their primary school teachers less than the other professions, with equal qualifications.

    The resilience of young people after the crisis

    INJEP barometer

    After two years of pandemic, the morale of young people seems to be returning to optimism. This is in any case the main result of the DJEPVA Barometer on Youth 2022, carried out each year, since 2016, by the National Institute for Youth and Popular Education (INJEP) and the Research Center for the Study and observation of living conditions (CRÉDOC).

    Among the information found in this barometer:

    – one out of two young people expresses a positive state of mind (48%);

    – 66% of 18-30 year olds are confident in their future;

    – 51% would have given their time on a voluntary basis at some point during the year (+13 points);

    – 36% say they volunteer their time to an association or other sports organization.

    However, effects are persistent, especially in young women:

    – the feeling of episodic loneliness is more frequent than before the pandemic (+ 5 points);

    – among young women, whose morale had deteriorated significantly in 2021 (-9 points), the proportion of positive states of mind remains down 6 points compared to the period preceding the health crisis.
