Dominic Thiem: Ex-US Open champion declares season over after bankruptcy in Vienna against Daniil Medvedev

Thiem’s form curve had recently pointed upwards again. After a disappointing first-round loss at the US Open in early September, the Austrian reached the final at the Challenger tournament in Rennes and was in the semi-finals in Gijon and Antwerp.

In Vienna, on the other hand, it was already over in the second match. Tommy Paul, number 31 in the world, had beaten Thiem in the first round after a set deficit, but Medvedev was now one size too big.

“The first seven or eight games were really, really good,” explained Thiem in an interview with “Servus TV”. Up to the point of 3: 5 from the Austrian point of view it was a balanced match, after that the US Open winner of 2020 was no longer able to maintain the level of fourth in the world rankings.

Thiem declares the 2022 season over

As a result of the defeat, Thiem once again narrowly missed his self-declared goal of returning to the top 100 in the world. Nothing will change in 2022, as the 29-year-old announced in the press conference after the match.

“We decided that I would focus fully on preparation,” said Thiem, declaring his season over.

It had previously been said that Thiem could qualify for the Masters in Paris-Bercy if he left Vienna early. On Wednesday, the Austrian received a wild card for the preliminary round of the 1000 tournament.

Thiem gets good news from ATP

The reason for Thiem’s rethinking? Good news from the ATP. Contrary to what was previously communicated, the former top ten player gets the full 45 points for his entry into the round of 16 instead of 25.

As the players’ association clarified in an email to tennisnet.com, the reason for this is that the zero points from the Masters in Indian Wells are taken from Thiem’s rating and he can therefore fully write in Vienna.
As the “ORF” explains, this is due to a “protected ranking” regulation for players who come back after a long injury. Accordingly, said players can later replace a zero score in a tournament that would otherwise remain in their personal points balance with a different result.

Thiem: “It’s been exhausting in the last few weeks”

Thiem now has 550 points in his world rankings account, which should ensure his qualification for the Australian Open in January 2023. “I’ll finish at 100, 101 or 102. Under normal circumstances it should work out,” said the Austrian. In a Grand Slam, the 104 best-placed professionals are firmly in the main field of the tournament.

Thiem comes in handy. “It’s been exhausting in the last few weeks,” he said with regard to the dense program.

Now there are two weeks of vacation on the program before Thiem will devote himself to preparing for the new season in mid-November.
