A Chinese pair awaits Hjalte Johansen and Emma Irring Braüner in the quarter-finals at the World Junior Championships.

Four Danish couples became one after Thursday’s matches at UVM in the Spanish city of Santander.

Hjalte Johansen and Emma Irring Braüner, who are seeded third, won 21-17, 21-16 over the Japanese Seiya Inoue/Kokona Ishikawa.

The mixed doubles are thus the only Danes who have qualified for Friday’s quarter-finals. The Chinese Yu Hao and Qin Hui Zhi are waiting here. A difficult task, predicts U19 national coach Rune Ulsing.

– They come with an enormous physique. They play fast, press and hit hard. There may not be much variety in their game, but they move well on the court. So we have to move really well tomorrow, get on the pitch and be sharp on the first balls, says Ulsing.

The Danish quarter-final will be played at approximately 12 o’clock.

Below you can read the U19 national coach’s assessment of Thursday’s four Danish matches.

Jeppe Søby/Sofie Røjkjær – Beom Soo-Park/Hee Jo-ko: 19-21, 12-21

– Jeppe and Sofie actually started well with good energy, were brave and ready for the plan. They also succeeded in things and got many balls down on the Koreans, who perhaps seemed a little surprised. But the Koreans came back well, and then Jeppe and Sofie just missed the first set. At the beginning of the second set, Jeppe injured one of his knees during a landing. He could complete, but he couldn’t get around the pitch properly. It was a shame, because they had a really good grasp of the game, says Rune Ulsing.

Hjalte Johansen/Emma Irring Braüner (3rd seed) – Seiya Inoue/Kokona Ishikawa: 21-17, 21-16

– It was a great match, where Hjalte and Emma really controlled the front and mid lane. They were ready to work hard in the duels, and they played at a very fast pace. I think there were really good things in that match. It was good to see they kept a steady level in the second set and made few mistakes. It clearly frustrated the Japanese, says the Danish U19 national coach.

Maria Højlund Tommerup/Kathrine Vang – Malya Hoarea/Camille Pognante (4th seed): 18-21, 16-21

– I think Maria and Kathrine came out with a slightly wrong attitude to the match, because we knew the French would come out at 120 kilometers per hour. And the girls were a little affected by it. There was too little energy and they weren’t sharp enough to stick to the game plan. It got a bit stressful in there today, and the French just had better movement and energy, says Ulsing.

Jakob Houe/Christian Faust Kjær (1st seed) – Song Hyun-Cho/Beom Soo-Park: 23-21, 15-21, 16-21

– It was an insanely good match by the Danes at a very high level. There was real pressure on the serve situation in the match, where you had to serve and return really well. The Koreans played steadily and gave almost no free points away. Jakob and Christian had to work hard to get the ball down, while the Koreans had it a little easier. That was probably what was decisive, although Jakob and Christian matched them really well. A fantastic performance by the boys, says Rune Ulsing.
