Crying chairman Arema: ‘Take responsibility for stadium disaster’ | Football

“I take full responsibility for what happened. I offer my deepest apologies to the victims, their families, the Indonesians and League 1,” Gilang Widya Pramana said in a crying statement on TV.

The riots started after a match between the clubs Arema FC from Malang and Persebaya Surabaya from Surabaya. After the club from Malang lost 2-3, thousands of supporters of both teams stormed the field. Police used tear gas to disperse the fans. Dozens of people died on the field, police said. The others later died in hospitals. Most would have died from lack of oxygen. Dozens of children are also among the dead. In addition to the dead, at least 323 people were also injured.
