Basketball: Warriors win against Wizards in Japan thanks to Curry

Stephen Curry scored 17 points in 17 minutes and the Golden State Warriors beat the Washington Wizards 104-95 on Sunday in the second of two preseason games in Japan.

Center Kristaps Porzingis scored 18 points, while hometown hero Rui Hachimura scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wizards, in front of another sold-out crowd at Saitama Super Arena, following Friday’s 96-87 victory for the Wizards. Warriors, reigning NBA champions.

Two-time All-NBA shooting guard Klay Thompson was once again dropped from the Golden State roster, while the Wizards rested star Bradley Beal after he played 18 minutes in Game 1.

As he did on Friday, Hachimura thrilled the parish crowd with a number of killer plays during his 26 minutes on the court.

He twice finished without contact on his way to a pair of three-point plays in the first half, receiving huge cheers each time. He also got fans out of their seats by showing off his reach on a three-point shot.

While many in the arena were wearing Curry jerseys, the two-time NBA MVP didn’t disappoint as he shot 3-for-8 from behind the arc, prompting celebrations from the crowd with every shot from long range.

Konishiki, a Hawaiian-born former sumo ozeki and avid basketball fan, was among the celebrities in attendance.
