– Vevey revives in Neuchâtel
The Veveysans, who remained on two losses in a row, beat Union at La Riveraine on Wednesday (80-93).
Swept away at Massagno then surprised at the Galeries by Starwings last weekend, the Vevey Riviera Basket recovered well by winning 80-93 in Neuchâtel in the only SB League meeting scheduled for this Wednesday. This lasted more than 2 h 15 with no less than 52 faults whistled by the refereeing trio. Never seen?
However, carried by their trio De La Fuente – Robertson – West (55 points between them), the Neuchâtel residents looked at the Vaudois eye to eye for twenty-five minutes. But to hope to regain the lead, the Riveraine’s top scorer, Dalan Ancrum, would have had to be less clumsy (5 points to 1/8 shooting). And while the score was 56-50, the fault – not obvious – of captain Killian Martin hurt people’s heads…
In the process, it was the start of the show Mateus Rodrigues Rocha, who dug a definitive gap on his own (11 points in 17 minutes). Aggressive towards the basket, skillful at long distance, the 23-year-old Swiss rear, established in place of Eliott Kübler, asserts himself a little more each day. And as Tyrell Johnson finally released a great game (24 points) and demonstrated why he had been recruited, Vevey flew to victory.
On Saturday, Niksa Bavcevic and her players will try to continue at Le Rocher, against BBC Nyon, while Union will be at rest. But all eyes will be on Ticino for the clash at the top between champion Friborg Olympic and his most serious rival Spinelli Massagno.
