Basketball: Towers coach Korner meets Masell in Bayreuth

Raoul Korner had to “concentrate”. When the head coach of the Veolia Towers Hamburg visited Bayreuth for a friendly at the beginning of September, he was already on his way to the wrong dressing room. On Saturday, the 48-year-old will meet his former club again, the usual arena – and an old colleague.

Korner’s longtime assistant Lars Masell has been training Upper Franconia since this summer. “We worked together for eight years. Of course you built a relationship there,” says the Towers coach before meeting his former student.

They coached together in Braunschweig for three years, after which Korner and Masell went to Bayreuth, where they spent five successful years. The latter then moved to Ludwigsburg in 2021 before returning as boss. Now he meets his teacher for the first time in this role in a competitive game.

A special situation. The Wilhelmsburg coach is impressed by how Masell has escaped the “shadow” of the assistant coach role. “I really like his demeanor,” says Korner. Like the towers, the Bayreuth team started the season with one win and one defeat.

As a teacher, Korner now wants to show his successor the limits. Just like the towers did when the Austrian had to sort himself out in the catacombs in September. The Towers won the Test 91-86.
