There is less and less, one day, and then there will come a Friday with great competitive content for the Azzurri with Down syndrome involved in the judo and basketball World Cup.
A Funchal, Capital of the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, the Italian delegation arrived just before midnight on 28 September, landing at the airport named after the most famous citizen of the island: Cristiano Ronaldo.
Team Italy is the most numerous to participate in these World Championships, now in their third edition: we are talking about 21 components (including 14 athletes, 6 technicians and a doctor). The other participating nations are: Saudi Arabia, Croatia, Finland, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Hungary.
The day of September 29 will serve both basketball players, directed by coaches Giuliano Bufacchi and assistants D’Erasmus e Dessìthan the judokas, trained by Baroncelli, Giglio e Meucci, to carry out a training session and undo the fatigue of the long journey that saw the Azzurri leave from Milan Malpensa, make a stopover and Lisbon and then reach Funchal. Two flights to chase the world titles, which await the Azzurri more than 2500 km from home.
PROGRAM – The competitions will officially start on Saturday 30 September. The reigning World Champion Italbasket will have the honor of playing the inaugural match against Hungary (2-a-side ball at 17:30 Italian time). The judokas will have to wait one more day: individual matches will be played on October 1st, team matches on October 2nd. Italy presents itself on the Portuguese mat with 6 athletes, already present at the EuroTrigames 2021. Brunetto, Forte e Verrengia they will fight in the most popular category, that of -73 kg. Davide Migliore (-60 kg) and Mirco Brighi (-81 kg) complete the men’s squad, while a Martina Tomba (-52 kg) the chances of medal in the women’s draw are entrusted.
